20 November 2001
Artis Conference Centre, Amsterdam

9.10 Welcome

  • Monique van Dusseldorp, CEO, Van Dusseldorp & Partners

9.15 – 9.45 Keynote speech – Harvesting the true value of digital content

A largely unexplored field, little is known of user experiences and feasible business models. In the early stages of rights management and in the beginning of figuring out how to sell commercial digital downloading, this opening session will try to answer the crucial question: What is the value-added content that consumers will pay for?

9.45-10.00 Q & A

10.00-11.00 Conditions to make digital rights management succesful

    • All digital rights management solutions involve a number of players – but legal, technology and access issues are preconditions for the success of DRM solutions.

    • · Overview of the technological issues and solutions – DRM market Analysis and Forecast. Watermarks, encryption, platform interoperability, billing, license holders and issuers.

    · The new EU Information Society Copyright Directive and the harmonisation of copyright issues have been a matter of ferocious debate. Especially article 6 of the Directive was seen by many as overly restrictive. Presentation on the implications.

11.00-11.15 Case study. Sales of online video

11.15-11.45 Coffee break and chance to visit exhibition

11.45-12.30 The battle for standards – outline of the issues at stake

    • Solutions to DRM challenges will enable untold amounts of new content to be made available in safe, open, and trusted environments. Industry and users are now demanding that standards be developed to allow interoperability so as not to force content owners and managers to encode their works in proprietary formats or systems. Others feel that protection of rights in a digital and connected world is ultimately not possible, and will result in other models.

    Panel discussion

12.30-13.00 Debate session – who should win the standards battle?

13:00-14.00 Lunch and time to visit the exhibition and meet DRM vendors and partners

14:00-15.00 Making digital content profitable – rights holders and their DRM strategies

What will it take to build consumer acceptance & loyalty for DRM-content? When will DRM-enabled content become profitable for owners, retailers & distributors? What additional services should you consider for your digital distribution strategy? Analyzing the digital rights management, tracking & payment strategies that are generating the most positive consumer response. What can broadcasters learn from publishers?

15.00-15.30 Lessons learnt – content case studies

    • – DRM as a tool for gatekeeping: bundling digital rights. Rather than selling access to individual content pieces, content owners are investigating bundling of content, and selling temporary access to packages.

    – The new online world: broadband.

15:30-16:30 DRM solutions – show and tell

Content owners report on their experiences with different DRM solutions

16:30-17:00 Coffee break

17:00-18:00 What does the future hold – research and new initiatives in the field of DRM

Interactive television – Wireless – Software and hardware solutions – Ubiquitous networking, limited content access: new challenges for digital rights management.
